Your Departure Airport
Canberra Airport (CBR)
Departing from: All flights depart from the main terminal.
Transiting through CBR Airport is pretty hassle free. There are three food outlets that offer sit-down dining options, take away snacks, coffee and sandwiches. There is also a retail store called Relay that sells newspapers, books and magazines as well as souvenirs and gifts should you need to do some shopping before departing for your flight. The terminal also gives you access to ATM machines, a Travelex booth, and payphones.
Your Destination Airport
Gold Coast Airport (OOL)
Arriving in: There is only one main terminal that services all flights to OOL.
As one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia, the Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is prepared for high traffic with its excellent facilities. There are brand name retail shops such as the Sunglasses Hut and French Connection, as well as a variety of food options like Red Rooster and NRG Express. Other services include ATMs, a currency exchange booth and free WiFi.
Taxis are located right outside the terminal, but be warned, this is an expensive way to travel. The journey from OOL Airport to the most popular part of the coast—Surfer’s Paradise—will cost you between £35-60 depending on traffic. Shuttles will run you door-to-door for a one-way cost of $21. The 761 and 777 public buses also run to the Broadbeach Tram Station (which can connect you to Surfer’s Paradise and Southport) for a fraction of the price of a taxi or shuttle.
For car hire, there are rental desks located right by the Domestic Arrivals exit, near baggage claim.
Do you need a form of identification?
Though this is a domestic flight, you must carry photo identification with you. This can be a social security card, a driver’s license or your passport. Please note: if you are an international traveller flying within Australia, it is recommended that you use your passport as your primary form of identification.
How long should you leave to get to the airport?
As this is a domestic flight departing and arriving in domestic terminals, it is recommended that you check in at least 45-60 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Please be aware that if you are travelling in a group, or are going on to a connecting flight, that you arrive 90-120 minutes before departure time.
Things you need to know
Time difference: The Gold Coast is in Queensland, a state that does not use Daylight Savings Time. So depending on the time of year, the Gold Coast can either be an hour behind Canberra, or in the same time zone. For accurate information, we recommend you check the time difference a day or two before you travel.
Weather: The Gold Coast has a humid subtropical climate, with temperate, warm temperatures all year round. Summer highs are similar to Canberra, with the mercury hitting around 28°C (though it is more humid than Canberra). You’ll find winters in this part of the world are mild and the temperatures do not tend to dip below 13-15°C during the day. The best time to visit the Gold Coast is in the autumn (March-May) when the weather is dry, tourism has slowed, and the average temperature is 25°C.
The Gold Coast is cheaper of the two cities, pretty much across the board, but not by a long way. Expect a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant on the Gold Coast to cost you around $70-75.
