Where to hire a car at Melbourne Airport
Although Melbourne Airport has 4 terminals, all the car hire counters are found in 1 spot. This is the ground floor of the car park immediately outside terminals 1, 2 and 3. If you land at Terminal 4, the At Terminal T1/T2/T3 car park is just a short walk away. Just be sure not to go to the similarly named At Terminal T4 car park.
Things to note about driving from Melbourne Airport
There are 2 main routes from the airport to Melbourne CBD. If you drive on the M2 the whole way, which is the quickest route, be aware that there are tolls on this road. As you approach the city, keep your eyes peeled for your exit (generally onto State Route 50), otherwise it’s easy to go too far.
First-time drivers in Melbourne are often baffled by the hook turn, a unique way of turning right when crossing tram lines. This video from VicRoads explains the system:
Popular driving routes from Melbourne Airport
Melbourne Airport is 22km from the CBD, which takes between 20 and 30 minutes depending on traffic levels. There are 2 main routes: following the M2 the whole way or going via Mascoma Street and joining the M2 halfway along.
Taking the M2 the whole way is the quicker option – saving 5 or more minutes – but it also has tolls to pay.
St Kilda is a popular beachside town to the south of Melbourne. The driving route is much the same, with the option of the M2 route with tolls or taking the long way round via the Western Ring Road. The most direct route takes between 25 and 40 minutes, while the circuitous option may be as long as 1 hour.
As well as hotel parking, St Kilda has some free road parking and a number of paid parking lots. See the best spots to leave your car on Parkopedia.
One of Victoria's big draws for drivers is the Great Ocean Road. If you want to go straight to this attraction, pick up your car and head to Torquay where the trail begins.
From Tullamarine, it takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to reach Torquay. The quickest route is to take the Western Ring Road and then head south-west on the M1.
Once you get to Torquay, you can explore the wonders of Bells Beach, the 12 Apostles, Great Otway National Park and all the other attractions of the Great Ocean Road at your leisure.
