In the south of Japan, it's generally best to visit in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). If you plan a trip for April, you may get to see the magical cherry blossom.
If you're travelling for a ski holiday, the season starts in Hokkaido in the weeks before Christmas, but a bit later in Honshu. January is the busiest time with the best snow, and this coincides with the school holidays. The ski season runs to mid-April and you can often get good deals on accommodation at this time.
