Also on the banks of the Yarra, is Southbank, where you will find the Arts Centre, a complex that comprises of theatres and a concert hall where you can see the city’s orchestra perform. It is in this same area where you can also step into the extraordinary National Gallery of Victoria, which is the oldest of its kind in the country, and holds some world-class art collections.

If you’re planning on heading to Fitzroy for its nightlife, and excellent boutique shopping options, don’t forget to make a bee-line for Fitzroy Gardens and step into Captain Cook’s Cottage, a landmark with a quirky backstory—the home was originally situated in Yorkshire, England, until it was brought over and rebuilt in the 1930s on the site you see today.

  • The shoulder seasons of spring (September-October) and autumn (March-May) are best for visiting Melbourne. The weather at this time is temperate and the crowds are much thinner than in summer. Autumn is a particular favourite, when the max temperatures are about 20°C, with lows of 10°C. 
  • Summer is hot and more crowded, with highs of 25°C, though this has been known to soar to the 30s.
  • Winter can sink as low as 6°C, but prices are at their lowest.
