The Gold Coast

Stay in Australia’s Gold Coast, the sparkling city on Queensland’s southern coast. Rising from its roots as a small port town in the late 19th century, the Gold Coast has become one of Australia’s largest cities, with people flocking to its shores to experience the guaranteed sunshine, the excellent surf, riveting theme parks, luxury resorts, its vibrant nightlife, and of course, the wonderful beaches.

The Gold Coast is a long, skinny, stretch of towns (over 55km) that have merged together to create a city that stretches right along the coast, but there aren’t only coastal treasures to explore in this part of the world, so planning where to stay depends entirely on what you’re looking for on your holiday to this gorgeous Australian resort town. Don’t be fooled, the coast is huge, stretching from Beenleigh in the north, right to Coolangatta in the south.

Where should you stay in Gold Coast?

The Central Coast

The most popular place to stay is along the central coast where you’ll find Surfer’s Paradise, Broadbeach, Main Beach and Mermaid Beach. This is where much of the action takes place, and the crowd is varied, from holidaying students, travelling backpackers, to romancing couples, and touring families. Expect tons of restaurants and a plethora of nightlife options, including some very popular clubs, particularly in Surfers Paradise. If you like a little flutter, you can roll the dice at Jupiters in Broadbeach, or book in to see a show. The accommodation on this part of the coast is very broad, and you will find everything from hostels and self catered apartments, to family friendly resorts and luxury high-rise hotels. If you’re with your family, it is recommended that you opt for the slightly quieter Main or Mermaid Beach areas, as they are still close to all the attractions, but away from the hubbub of the evening revelers.

South Coast

The southern coast is less developed than the central coast, but as a result the area is much more peaceful. Miami is considered to be the best for families, as accommodation here is very affordable, and the beaches wide and golden. For keen surfers, heading to Burleigh Heads and Kirra is the ticket, as these beaches offer the best surfing in the city. Meanwhile, Coolangatta has been seeing a huge revitalisation in recent years, with luxury apartment options and fancy hotels on the rise, along with a café culture that is thriving. There are also great options for snorkelling and diving around Cook Island, a fun arts and crafts market, and an excellent cultural centre where you can learn about the local indigenous population: the Minjungbal Aboriginals.

North Coast

The north isn’t famed for its beaches like the neighbourhoods further to the south are. Primarily it is made up of calm estuaries and waterways, which tend to draw families with very small children. However, don’t discount the north, as from here you can gain access to golf resorts, decent shopping and be within close proximity of the famed theme parks of Dreamworld and Warner Bros Movie World. There’s also Stradbroke Island nearby, which boasts beautiful deserted beaches. As for accommodation, on the north coast you can secure deluxe waterside villas, family friendly hotels, holiday apartments, and luxury spa hotels.

Transport on the Gold Coast

The public transport in Gold Coast is reliable but not hugely extensive. It isn’t pricey, but because the area is stretched over such a long way, getting from one end to the other can take a long time if you take a bus. Many opt instead to hire a car, which is recommended if you plan to go to the theme parks of the area, or just want to explore the coastal beaches.
