Cheap flights from Australia

Flight search is easier on the app.

Australia may be Down Under, but that will not stop you from seeing every corner of the world. With direct and connecting flights to domestic and international destinations from every side of the country, you can easily find your way to a new adventure with Skyscanner.

There are hundreds of airports in Australia, but all of the major aviation hubs in the country coincide with the largest cities located around the country. The top 10 airports in the nation are:

·         Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD)

·         Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (MEL)

·         Brisbane Airport (BNE)

·         Perth Airport (PER)

·         Adelaide Airport (ADL)

·         Gold Coast Airport (OOL)

·         Cairns Airport (CNS)

·         Canberra Airport (CBR)

·         Hobart International Airport (HBA)

·         Darwin International Airport (DRW)

All of these airports offer international routes barring Hobart’s airport. From Melbourne and Sydney, there are 60-90 direct routes. Qantas is the largest operating airline out of Australia, though other large carriers running international flights are Air New Zealand, Air Canada, United, Virgin Australia, JAL, Air China, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Emirates, and Etihad Airways.

Popular flights from Australia

If you’re looking for a holiday, there’s no better place to look than your own back yard. Enjoy the white powdered beaches of Australia’s most isolated city, the trendy metropolis of Perth (PER), which from the eastern coast will take around five hours of flying time. If you’re already on the eastern coast, but located in the south, a flight from Sydney (SYD) to Cairns (CNS) is only three hours, and will give you a chance to explore the UNESCO-listed Great Barrier Reef.

For short-haul flights, on the western side of the country, you can see the stunning Uluwatu Temple, or the thumping nightlife of Seminyak in Bali (DPS) on a quick three and a half hour journey from Perth. For the same travel time, you can fly from the eastern coast to New Zealand’s harbourside jewel of Wellington (WLG) and tour the Te Papa Museum.

Long haul flights from the west can see you embarking on a fantastic safari trip from the base of Johannesburg (JNB), South Africa’s largest, and perhaps most sophisticated city. Make sure you see Constitution Hill, and the Apartheid Museum to get a real feel for this town’s history and culture. Or from the eastern coast to the East, you can be touring the energetic streets of quirky, enchanting Tokyo (NRT), where you can dance in Shinjuku, shop in Ginza, and see the shrine of Asakusa.

Where to find cheap flights from Australia

Your best bet for finding cheap flights is to travel from the airports that offer the most flight options, and the most competition between companies. On the east coast, this is Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL) and Brisbane (BNE), and on the west coast, this is Perth (PER).

Look for low-cost carriers too, especially for domestic routes, and flights out to Asia, as there are a lot of airlines like Tigerair, Jetstar, Jetgo Australia, Sharp Airlines, AirAsia and REX tend to offer less expensive routes. Sometimes these can also operate out of smaller airports, like Essendon Airport (MEB) in Melbourne, but many will travel from the primary ports, like Darwin Airport (DRW).

Lastly, make sure you keep your dates flexible, and use our calendar tool, which can sift through rates across a month instead of a specific date, as often mid-week routes can be far cheaper than your original itinerary.
