Flights to United States

What's the United States like?

Even if you haven't been before, America is a familiar country thanks to its huge appeal on the big screen and its widespread fast food chains.

Similar in size to Australia, there's a lot of variety in the States. California and Hawaii are known for their big waves and laid back attitude, in contrast with the hectic pace of life in New York on the opposite coast. The Pacific Northwest around Portland and Seattle is growing in popularity thanks to its hipster status, while the Deep South has a charm, and a cuisine, like nowhere else.

National parks are a huge draw in America. Some to think about including in your itinerary are the Glacier National Park (Montana), the Grand Canyon (Arizona), Mammoth Cave (Kentucky), Yellowstone (Wyoming) and Yosemite (California).

When is the best time to visit the United States?

Because of its large size, when to visit depends a lot on where you're going in the States.

Many Aussies like to visit during the local winter, as that's summertime in USA. Beach visits are more pleasant and there's no need to rug up. If you head north, say to Chicago, New York or Seattle during the American winter, there's a good chance you'll see snow.

American schools break over their summer and then again briefly over Christmas. This makes accommodation trickier to book in more popular destinations.

During summer, the southern states (around Louisiana and Mississippi) can experience hurricanes.

How expensive is the United States?

There are plenty of bargains to be had in the US, but some of the major cities (such as LA and New York) can be expensive. There's plenty of cheap food available if you're happy to eat American, many of the local craft beers are cheaper than their Aussie counterparts, and intercity travel is extremely cheap by bus and plane.
