Dublin Airport is the busiest airport in the country and has decent facilities to deal with the traffic it sees. There is access to currency exchange services, ATMs, pharmacies and free and comprehensive WiFi. Passengers can shop at the Loop and dine in one of the many restaurants and bars within the airport.

London Gatwick is a fairly modern airport and as such comes well equipped with amenities for travelling passengers. There are cash machines both before and after security, and passengers will have access to currency exchange, be able to book into nearby hotels, and arrange transport from the airport. There are also a wide variety of retailers and dining options for you if you want to buy gifts or simply need to grab something to eat before exiting. There is free WiFi but it is only available for 90 minutes.

Transport

There are lots of options for getting into the centre of town from London Gatwick. One of the cheapest and most efficient ways is to go by rail. There are a number of different options; the first is to take the Gatwick Express, a 30 minute journey which takes you directly into London Victoria, a station in the centre of town. These trains run every 15 minutes and cost around 18GBP ($36) for a single fare and about 30GBP for a return ($60). You can also take the Southern and Thameslink rail services to Clapham Junction and London Bridge, which are about half the price, especially if you book in advance.

There are also coaches run by easyBus and National Express into town, which can start from as low as 2GBP ($4) but only with advance purchase. These also take a lot longer to get into the centre of town and depend entirely on the traffic.

You can grab a taxi right out of the terminal, but that isn’t recommended as it can become really expensive. You can book online through the airport, but prices will run to around 80-90GBP ($160-180).

If you’d rather hire a car you can find several options for car hire at LGW, including Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Budget.

How long should you leave to get to the airport?

As this is an international flight, it is recommended that you check in at least 90-120 minutes before the scheduled departure time for this portion of the flight. Please be aware that if you are travelling in a group, or are going on to a connecting flight, that you must arrive 120 minutes before departure time.

Time difference: There is no time difference between Dublin and London.

Weather: The weather in London is pretty close to that of Dublin. The summers are warm, but not stifling, with average temperatures of 19-20°C. The shoulder seasons of spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are pleasant, but more prone to rain. Winter is festive, but the mercury hovers around a chilly 4°C.

Dublin and London are fairly similar in price too, though across the board London is the more expensive. Expect a meal for two in the city, at a mid-range restaurant to cost about 50GBP ($105).
