Heathrow Airport is easy to transit through. Its excellent connections from London, and well-serviced facilities make travel through here a cinch. Before their flight, passengers will have access to a ton of retailers selling everything from clothing to electronics. The airport in Madrid is the largest in Spain, and has an excellent list of facilities. There are a plethora of restaurants, bars and cafes to grab some refreshments in post-flight and a number of retail stores to pick up a few last minute bits and pieces before exiting the airport. Passengers will find they also have access to currency exchange and postal services, cash machines, and WiFi.

Transport

There is a bunch of different ways to get into Madrid, and the public transportation into the city is really good. You can catch the Metro which will run you into town for less than 5EUR ($8) and depending on what line you take, the journey can be as short as 11 minutes. The Metro is accessible from Terminals 1-4. There are also trains you can catch from Terminal 4, which run into the city centre too, and are also cheap and efficient.

You can grab a taxi directly out of the airport, but a journey into the city centre will cost you between 25-30EUR ($46).

If you’d prefer to drive during your stay, most of the biggest names in rental hire operate in MAD Airport. These include Avis, Hertz and Europcar.

How long should you leave to get to the airport?

As this is an international flight, it is recommended that you check in at least 90-120 minutes before the scheduled departure time for this portion of the flight. Weather: Madrid mostly experiences warm, dry weather throughout the year, with the months of May to June being the most pleasant, with average temperatures between 20-32°C. Deep summer (July-August) can be stifling, with the mercury soaring as high as 40°C. Winter is generally mild at around 9°C, but can sink as low as 2°C so pack warmly if you visit in this season.

Madrid tends to be quite a lot cheaper than London, across all areas. If you want to hit the town for a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant, expect the bill to come to a very reasonable 40EUR ($61).
