Travel is easy within Switzerland, thanks to its established train network and tourist sites are typically found within short distances of one another.

If you’re planning to leave Switzerland already, be sure you’ve stopped by the following places:

Bern

Literary genius Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once termed the city of Bern the most beautiful place he had seen and that was in 1779. Modern day Bern continues to captivate the hearts of tourists with its sights and activities. The Zytglogge (Clock Tower) still tells the time to the people of the city, just as it has for the past 500 years, and the city’s marvellous architecture is evident by the Cathedral of Bern and the House of Parliament. In Bern, you’ll also find the Bear Park, where you can come face to face with the bears along the Aare River.

Zurich

Besides its financial significance, you can also see the trendier side of Swiss life in Zurich via its classy boutiques and chic restaurants. In Zurich, you’ll also find the statue of Alfred Escher, who was a crucial figure in the development of the city. Additionally, you can visit the Zurich Zoo, located on Zurich Mountain, to see almost 4000 different species of animals.

Basel

Basel is one the oldest cities in Switzerland and has a wide array of museums for your viewing. The Museum Tinguely commemorates famous sculptor Jean Tinguely and exhibits many of his intriguing works. The Museum der Kulturen is Switzerland’s biggest ethnological museum, documenting the history of Europeans and other cultures. Outdoors, you can take a relaxing stroll along the river Wiese.

For a change of scenery, consider the following countries as your next holiday spot:

France

On the west borders of Switzerland is France, the romantic country wherein you’ll find the Eiffel Tower and Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere. At the Louvre Museum, you can also view world class masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. Then, for fun-filled family time, head to Disneyland Paris where familiar cartoon characters come alive.

Germany

Another of Switzerland’s neighbours is Germany, in the north. The country has both technological and artistic accolades, reflected in its innovative goods and countless theatres up and down the country. Make sure to visit the residence of King Ludwig II, the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, or the Brandenburg gate from the Cold War in Berlin.

Netherlands

Due to the low lying nature of its landmass, Netherlands has a beautiful collection of lakes and other water bodies that make it a scenic tourist spot. These include Markermeer Lake, Brielse Lake and Lauwersmeer Lake. Additionally, you can see paintings created by legendary artist Vincent Van Gogh during his troubled life at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
