The British Virgin Islands are an overseas territory under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of the United Kingdom located in the Caribbean. The islands comprise part of the Virgin Islands archipelago. It is still officially called the Virgin Islands, but is often referred to as the British Virgin Islands to distinguish it from the US Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands. The main islands of BVI are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, and the rest of the territory are over fifty other smaller islands and cays. The total area of BVI is 153 square kilometres. The capital Road Town is located on the largest island, Tortola. The role of tourism in BVI is highly significant, accounting for nearly half, approximately 45%, of the national income. It is a popular tourist destination especially for US citizens.
