The people in the country are generally warm and friendly to visiting tourists.

Where to go

Kigali, the capital and largest city of Rwanda, is located near the geographic centre of the country. It also serves as a major economic, cultural, and transport centre of Rwanda. In here, tourists can visit several memorials, museums, and centres memorialising the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. One of the tourist centres is the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre opened in April 2004, the tenth anniversary of the start of the genocide in the country. There are also the National Museum of Rwanda and the Kandt House Museum of Natural History. Kigali is also home to international class hotels; some of which have historical significance. The Mille Collines hotel used to be a refugee centre during the genocide.

The flag carrier airline of the country, RwandAir, offers domestic and international travels to places in East Africa, Central Africa, West Africa, and Southern Africa with its main base at the Kigali International Airport. Some of the major destinations of RwandAir include Accra in Ghana, Bujumbura in Burundi, Douala in Cameroon, and Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo.

Accra, the capital and largest city of Ghana, is a modern metropolis which has a remarkable architecture that reflects the city’s history as a 19th-century suburb of Victoriaborg and the capital of the British Gold Coast. Within the city, one can see buildings of 19-century architecture, harmoniously mixed with modern skyscrapers and apartment blocks. Accra today is based on the original British, Danish, and Dutch forts and the surrounding communities. Popular attractions within the city include the National Museum of Ghana, the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Archives of Ghana, the Jamestown lighthouse, and Ghana’s central library.

Kigali International Airport (Kanombe International Airport), formerly known as the Gregorie Kayibanda International Airport, is the primary airport in the Rwandan capital of Kigali. This is the gateway for most countries which have direct flights from the country. It also serves as the transit airport for Goma and Bukavu located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The airlines which fly to and from this airport are the RwandAir which has flights to Brazzaville, Bujumbua, Entebbe, Dar es Salaam, Dubai, Johannesburg, Kilimanjaro, Lagos, Mombasa, Nairobi-Jomo Kenyatta, and Libreville; Air Burundi going to Bujumbura; Air Uganda to Entebbe; Brussels Airlines for those coming and going to Brussels; and Ethiopian Airlines for Addis Ababa. Other airlines being serviced in this airport are Kenya Airways with flights to and from Bujumbura and Nairobi-Jomo Kenyatta; KLM which makes its way to Amsterdam; and Qatar Airways going to Doha and Entebbe.

How to get out

Exiting tourists are asked to submit vaccination for yellow fever before they can leave the country and go back to their destination origin. Individuals can opt to fly out from the Kigali International Airport. There are also bus companies in Uganda like the Kampala coaches, Jaguar, and Ontracom that enter and exit Kigali. Since there is also an open border in Tanzania to Rwanda, people can also exit to the said country though they should be warned of the unpaved roads along the way.
