What to see & do
Nyungwe Forest - Located in southwest Rwanda, the Nyungwe Forest is one of Africa's oldest and largest protected mountain rainforest. It is home to one of the largest concentration of chimpanzees and other primate species. Aside from viewing the animals in their habitat, trekking within the forest trails are worth it, as there are hidden areas in the park that are well worth the visit.
Nyamata and Ntarama Genocide Memorial - Located just twenty minutes away from each other, the Genocide memorials of Nyamata and Ntarama are frequented by tourists who would like to get a glimpse of Rwanda during the depressing period. Most exhibitions show the faces of the victims, the status of the survivors, and evidences, such as victims' clothing piled on benches, the roof pockmarked with bullet holes, and the open crypts that hold remains of over 40,000 people who suffered during that time. It is quite haunting to visit, but it is educational and it is worth the time. Travellers are also encouraged to provide donations to both memorials, as the establishments receive limited support from the government.
Musanze Cave - The Musanze Cave is a 1.25 mile long cave which is home to a large bat colony. It has 31 entrances, most being roof collapses. It was formed from lava basaltic layers from the Bisoke and Sabyinyo volcanoes, and is a popular tourist destination. Another novelty in visiting the caves are its collapses, as it creates an incredible array of coloured shafts of light.
Volcanoes National Park - Named as one of Rwanda's treasures, the Volcanoes National Park is known as a haven for the mountain gorilla. It is also home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga mountains namely the Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo, which are covered in rainforest and bamboo. It is located in north-western Rwanda, and borders the Virunga National Park in DR Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.

When going around Rwanda, travellers may cover short distances by walking or by riding motorcycle taxis (taxi-moto) and bicycle taxis (taxi-velo). Meanwhile, long distances are best covered by riding minibuses, which are typically crammed to the door by adults, children, bags, and even farm fowls.
