Cheap flights from Greenland

Greenland is located at the far northeast of North America – in the Arctic. It is surrounded by neighbouring countries Iceland in the southeast, Canada in the west, and Svalbard, Norway in the northeast. The country is composed of four regions: Sineriak Bananeqarfik (Southern Greenland), the most easily accessed part and with least extreme weather; Western Greenland, home to the capital Nuuk; Eastern Greenland, the gateway to the Northeast Greenland National Park; and Northern Greenland, where the national park is located.

Greenland is considered as the biggest non-continental island in the world. It also has the lowest population density. Greenland’s population is composed primarily of Greenlandic Inuit, as well as people of European descent. Most of them live along the fjords in the southwest that offers mild temperatures. More than 75% of the country’s land area is covered by a thick ice cap. Greenland has such extreme climates that the locals (Uummannaq) experience daylight for two months every year.

Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1979, it gained its status as a Danish dependent territory with limited self-government.

Where to go

Nuuk, the capital and largest city of Greenland located on the south-western coast, is an Arctic metropolis with shopping and dining establishments. Despite its modernity, it has retained that small town feel of nature, traditions, and cultural diversity. Visit the Katuaq Cultural Center that is inspired by the Northern Lights. Explore Nuuk’s many museums and historical sites or enjoy the outdoors through whale watching, skiing, and riding a coastal ferry.

Disko Bay is one of the most popular must-visit destinations in Greenland. Located at the western coast of the country, it is home of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ilulissat Icefjord. From Disko Bay, go on a boat trip to the Ice Cap or Ice Sheet, the world’s second largest ice sheet next to Antarctica.

The Greenlandic airline Air Greenland flies to Copenhagen, Denmark from the Kangerlussuaq Airport and the Narsarsuaq Airport. Air Greenland also has flights to Iceland’s international airport in Keflavik, as well as same-day connections to almost all parts of Canada including Ottawa, Vancouver, St. John’s, and Goose Bay.

With no long haul flights available from Greenland, visitors can travel from Nuuk, Greenland to Washington, D.C. via Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik, Iceland. The capital of the United States is located in the mid-Atlantic region of the East Coast, surrounded by Maryland and Virginia. Visit its numerous historical sites and museums including that Washington Monument, National Mall, Tidal Basin that showcases cherry blossom trees from Japan, and National Archives in which visitors can find important documents about the American history. Washington, D.C is likewise a national centre for the arts. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is home to the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington Ballet.

How to get out

Greenland has two airports big enough to accommodate large airlines. One of them is the Kangerlussuaq Airport, the international hub for Air Greenland. It is located in the Qeqqata municipality in central-western Greenland. The other one is the Narsarsuaq Airport which is situated in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland.
