Cheap flights from South Africa

Stunning South Africa has many sides to its vast landscape, and if you are seeking to explore them, or find your way to other magical nations across the world, you will find the connections you need to in various points around the country. Skyscanner can help you find your closest airport, and all the routes you can book from there in a matter of moments.

And there are plenty of options for you, as there are over 70 public airports that connect resident and travellers of South Africa to destinations within the country, and outside of it. The most comprehensive in the country is the O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, followed by the Cape Town International Airport (CPT), however, the other major facilities in the country are:

·         King Shaka International Airport (DUR)

·         Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ)

·         East London Airport (ELS)

Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) is the busiest, and largest airport in the country, with over 80 direct flight routes, and passengers can get to a plethora of domestic destinations, as well as international ones from this hub. South African Airways provides the most routes from this base, but you will find there are flights offered with Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, Turkish Airlines, Air Botswana, Qatar Airways, Emirates, EgyptAir, Air Seychelles, Kenya Airways, Air France, British Airways, and many others.

Popular flights from South Africa

With South Africa being so large, it is generally preferable to explore domestic destinations via air transit. Visit the big cities, like Johannesburg (JNB), Cape Town (CPT), and Durban (DUR).

However, as Africa is such a beautiful and diverse continent, it would be a shame not to see as much of it as you can. Fly to Dar es Salaam (DAR) for a chance at exploring the eastern coastline, and climbing Africa’s highest mountain; Mount Kilimanjaro. Or fly to Walvis Bay (WVB) on the Namibian Skeleton Coast, on the western side. The northern cities, like Cairo (CAI) will also beckon, with the Egyptian culture reaching back several millennia, something which you can investigate in the city’s stunning museums, and its ancient pyramids.

Of course, if you’re willing to journey on long-haul flights you can enjoy the alpine beauty of cities like Munich (MUC) in Germany, and see the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein. Beijing (PEK) also awaits, another age-old culture that has seen the rise and fall of dynasties that created some of the most spectacular monuments in the world, like the Great Wall of China, and the Forbidden City.

Where to find cheap flights from South Africa

No one likes to overspend on their flights, so top-tip number one, is to keep your options open. This means allowing our search engine to look for connecting routes, and low-cost providers. However, you can save money if you are flexible about when you travel. Typically flights around the days of the weekend are the most expensive, so looking for flights mid-week can generally lower the ticket cost. We also advise using our calendar feature to check out the best time of the month to fly, along with the best day, so you’re leaving no stone unturned when it comes to price-busting.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Cape Town (CPT) and Johannesburg (JNB) will offer you more choice in who you fly with, as these are much larger hubs than the smaller regional ports of South Africa, so if you can book your flights through these hubs, you will find the rates are often lower.
