Where to go

UNESCO World Heritage-listed site Riga is inarguably the most popular travel destination in Latvia. One can plan their itinerary based on the two major parts that comprise the city, divided by the river Daugava: the medieval town in the centre, east side of the river, which is surrounded by a ring of 19th- and early 20th-century architecture. Most tourists flock the Old Town and the area around the Freedom Monument, located nearby. Walking tours are considered as the best way to explore the city, however. It covers plenty of historic and notable sights. One can also wander around the Old Town Square: Triangula Bastion, Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, St. Peter's Church, Porcelain Museum, and National History Museum of Latvia, among others. The Cathedral (Doma) Square is home to Riga Cathedral, Museum of the Barricades of 1991, The Three Brothers, Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, and more. Powder Tower and City Wall, on the other hand, is home to Freedom Monument, the Museum of War, Museum of War, Art Nouveau buildings on Alberta and Elizabetes streets, and Esplanade Park.

The city of Moscow is just around two to three hours away from Riga by plane. The Russian capital is known as an iconic global city, which played a key role in the development of the Russian state and the world. Some of the noteworthy sites one should visit in Moscow are the Red Square (the heart of the city and usually the first destination for tourists), and within it are Lenin Mausoleum (where the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin is located) and St Basil Cathedral; The Kremlin, a massive structure that houses a diamond collection in the Armoury; the kitschy Old Arbat Street; the famed Bolshoi Theatre; Novodevichy Convent, which functions as both a convent and a fortress and is one of the best preserved historical complexes in all of Moscow; and one of the greatest museums in the world, Tretyakov Gallery.

Currently, there is no long-haul flights offered at Riga International Airport.
