It is located northwest of Martinique and south-southeast of Guadeloupe. The country occupies a total area of 750 square kilometres. Where to go

Emerald Pool Nature Trail - This short, 15-minute hike through the Emerald Pool Nature Trail is perfect for beginning hikers. The trail can easily be accessed from the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, and is a slightly rocky downhill trek to a clearing and a waterfall. The pool at the bottom of the waterfall is a chilly place to go for a swim.

Cabrits National Park - The Cabrits National Park is located north of Portsmouth. It was established in 1986 with over 1,313 acres to protect the tropical forest, coral reefs, and wetlands. Inside the national park are hiking trails for visitors and an English garrison called Fort Shirley. Fort Shirley has undergone restorations, but was originally an 18th century stronghold to defend north Dominica, and was later abandoned. The restoration began in 1989. Visitors can pay a small fee to tour the grounds and view the spectacular scenery of the Prince Rupert Bay and the remains of a volcanic crater.

Boiling Lake - No one should leave Dominica without visiting the nation's World Heritage Site, a flooded fumarole filled with bubbling greyish-blue water called the Boiling Lake. The lake is enveloped in a cloud of vapour, and measures roughly 200 feet to 250 feet across. It is the second largest hot lake in the world, after the Frying Pan Lak in Waimangu Valley, New Zealand.
