 Emerald Airport

Emerald Airport (EMD) is a small regional air facility that services the historical and rural town of Emerald. Set in the highlands of Queensland state, this charming town draws visitors of all kinds, especially keen fishermen and women who want to throw their line into the azure waters of Lake Maraboon.

The airport itself is made up of one main terminal that has undergone an extension project that was completed just recently, in 2014. However, the amenities remain fairly threadbare, with just a kiosk offering refreshments, and short and long-term parking lots. However, you will find that there are six reliable car rental agencies operating out of and around the Emerald Airport, and these are Europcar, Thrifty, Avis, OAQ, Budget and Hertz. If you are visiting Emerald it is recommended that you hire a car, as there isn’t a great deal of public transport in the area, and having a vehicle will allow you to better explore the town’s surrounding hinterlands. Renting a car can be done at the agencies when you land or in advance with Skyscanner’s search tool.

Virgin Australia, Qantas and Alliance Airlines fly in and out of Emerald Airport, with all flights operating routes to Brisbane (BNE). Should you want to fly internationally, Brisbane is an excellent hub to be directed to, as this city’s hub flies to destinations within New Zealand, Southeast Asia, Oceania, North America, and the Middle East, as well as offering a whole host of regional flights across Australia.

Travel Information

· Only 5km outside of the city centre, you will find the drive from the airport is less than a 10 minute drive away. All you do is head west and join Gregory Highway/National Route 55, then after three and a half kilometres, turn left onto National Route 55. At the roundabout, take the third exit onto Max Gorlick Drive, and then continue onto Egerton Street until you come into the Emerald CBD.

· You can take a taxi from the airport into town. The journey isn’t long, and as there aren’t any public transport options that service the airport, this is the only way to get into central Emerald if you aren’t planning on renting a car when you land. Expect the taxi fare to come to around $16. Alternate airport transfers are also available to passengers if you book online.
