Emerald Airport (EMD)

Emerald Airport is a regional airport that is situated only 6km south of the town centre. This is a small facility and passengers will find a kiosk offering refreshments, as well as short and long-term car parking lots, but that is about it in terms of amenities. If you are travelling to or from Emerald it is recommended that if you need to use banking or postal facilities to do so within the township itself.

Airlines to Emerald

There are only three airlines that service Emerald Airport, but these are large domestic and international carriers and all fly to an extensive selection of destinations within Australia and beyond. These are Qantas, Virgin Australia and Alliance Airlines.

Taxis do serve the airport, and you’ll find that the journey is a short 10 minute ride into town. It will cost approximately £16.

By car

There are six reliable car hire companies that all operate out of Emerald Airport. These are Avis, Budget, Thrifty, Hertz, Europcar and OAQ.

What can you do in Emerald?

This little town has a fascinating history that dates back to 1879,when it was established because of its sapphire fields.

So what can you do in this charming township? Well the first stop should be the Emerald Centenary of Federation Mosaic Pathway, where you can walk through history on the beautiful tiles that depict 100 years of this town’s past. Visit the Historic Railway Station, listed by the National Trust and a fascinating insight into modes of transport in the 1900s.

For the outdoors, you can’t really go wrong in this pretty part of the country. Pick up your fishing rod, and head to Lake Maraboon, which is stocked with all sorts of fish, including an angler-favourite: barramundi. Bring the kids and make a day of it by utilising the lake for swimming, and the picnic table areas for a BBQ.

Or spend a day in the serene surrounds of the town’s beautiful Botanic Gardens, which are situated on the banks of the Nogoa River. If you love flowers however, perhaps the best place to be is in Morton Park where you can see a stunning reproduction of Van Gogh’s sunflowers. Standing 25 metres high, this painting is a tribute to the area, as it is celebrated for its many sunflower fields.

When should you go?

When you should go depends on what kind of weather you like; in summers this town can see highs of a sweltering 35°C. Spring and autumn are cooler but still pleasant with temperatures ranging from 15°C-28°C. Winters rarely dip below the 10°C mark.
