Ballina Byron Gateway Airport, Australia

Owned by the Ballina Shire Council, the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK) is the main transport hub for both Ballina and the tourist hotspot of Byron Bay. Travellers wanting to explore this lovely northern New South Wales coastline, need only fly into this compact but convenient airport.

Able to handle up to 500,000 passengers annually, the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport has a decent range of facilities that include cash dispensing machines, passenger assistance, a public telephone, special needs facilities, a visitor information desk, a parents’ room and free WiFi available throughout the terminal. For passengers feeling a little peckish, they can relax in the Café Horizon, where diners can enjoy the local produce, such as cold snacks, hot meals and refreshing beverages.  

Several airlines operate out of Ballina-Byron Gateway Airport, including Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Regional Express (REX), and FlyPelican. Exploring Byron and Ballina couldn’t be easier, with direct flights departing from Sydney (SYD), Newcastle (NTL), and Melbourne (MEL).

Travel Information

· You can choose from five different hire companies at Ballina-Bryon, and these are Thrifty, Budget, Hertz, Europcar and Avis. You can also organise a car rental online with our search tool, if you’d like to have a car waiting for you. Driving the 3km to Ballina takes around five minutes, and all you need to do is head west on Southern Cross Drive, and at the roundabout take the first exit onto N Creek Road. For Byron Bay, the drive is longer (roughly 30 minutes), as the town is 36km north of the airport. Take the Pacific Highway from Southern Cross Drive, then take the exit towards Myocum Road. At the roundabout, take the 4th exit onto Ewingsdale.

· For Byron Bay you can take the 640 Bus directly from the airport into the township. The journey is run by Blanche’s bus service, and it takes over an hour. The plus side is that single fares cost $9.60 for adults and $4.80 for children. For journeys into Ballina Coach stop, the fares should be approximately $2-3 for adults and $1-1.50 for children. Shuttles are also a good option if you don’t fancy catching public transport, but expect a trip into Bryon to cost around $20 per person. Otherwise, there are airport transfers that you can organise with our search tool before you land.

· Taxis are a good option for travel into Ballina, as a typical fare only costs around $10. For Byron Bay though this service can be quite expensive, with a ride in a cab costing upwards of $80-90.

There are shuttle buses that take passengers to Byron Bay and nearby areas, or you could opt for the public bus service operated by Blanchs.
