Why visit Townsville?

Townsville is one of the largest towns on Queensland’s northern coastline, and whilst it is often overlooked in favour of the northern climes of Cairns, or the quaint beauty of Noosa, it has everything you could want from a seaside town. Expect to find fine dining, great shopping, a good nightlife, as well as a whole host of stunning surrounding countryside, from hinterland, to rainforests, beaches, and then out to the remarkable Great Barrier Reef.

Things to do in Townsville

In the town itself, you can visit the Museum of Tropical Queensland or the Maritime Museum, or even go on one of the walking military tours, and learn what part Townsville had to play in the history of Australia. Then spend some time on The Strand, a promenade along the waterfront of the city and where many restaurants, bars and cafes are on offer when you start to feel a bit peckish.

However, it is the natural attractions near the city that really take the prize. Just in view is the spectacular Magnetic Island, which is easily reached via a 20-minute boat ride, and is considered a pristine oasis within reach of the city. Horseride, sunbathe, hike and swim on this fantastic island.

Make time in your schedule for a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef also, as one of the natural wonders of the world, this has to be seen to be believed. You can take boat trips out there, which will ferry you responsibly to parts of the reef where you can snorkel, and see the spectacular rainbow corals and technicolour fish that live here. It doesn’t matter how old you are, this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that you will remember long after you’ve left for home.
