Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova, in Eastern Europe is a landlocked country bordered by Romania to west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. Its capital and largest city is Chisinau. The country is also close to the Black Sea, which gives it a mild and sunny climate.

Where to go

Moldova is known for its wines, with a well-established wine industry. Wine tours are a must when visiting the country, as it has a vineyard area of around 147,000 hectares or 360,000 acres. 102,500 hectares or 253,000 acres of the land are utilised for commercial production, and most of the wine production is for export. Moldova is home to Cricova, one of the world’s largest wine cellars. Other notable vineyards/cellars in the country also include Purcari, one of the oldest wineries in Moldova; Ciumai, Romanesti, Cojusna, and Milestii Mici, which was registered in the Guinness World Records as the biggest wine collection in the world. Aside from wine tours, tourism in Moldova also focuses on its natural landscapes and history. A number of museums are located in downtown Chisinau, such as the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, the Museum of Natural History, and the National Museum of Fine Arts. Within the capital, other sites that can be visited include the Cathedral Park, Stefan Cel Mare Monument, Rose Valley, Riscani Park, Botanica Park, Parcul Valea Morilor, Parcul Dendrariu, Parcul Alunelul, Pushkin Museum, and the Memorial Park. Meanwhile, 40 kilometres or 25 miles from Chisinau is the Capriana Monastery, one of the country’s most prominent monasteries. There is also Orheiul Vechi, considered as Moldova’s best known sight, which is a 13th-century cave monastery. Near the vicinity is a tourist centre with a small museum, restaurant, and a hotel.

The most iconic landmark here is the Parthenon, which is also a world renowned attraction. Other ancient monuments that can be found in Athens are of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman origins. The city is also home to the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
