Things to do in Kuala Lumpur

Head down to Bukit Bintang, the shopping and entertainment mecca of Kuala Lumpur; shopaholics will find succour in the Pavilion KL, a sleek and upmarket mall, whilst revellers will the love the nightlife in the Changkat area. For those after a bargain, or something more particular to the city, find your way to the Central Market, where you can delve into the handicraft and boutique stores for something unique.

After you’ve had your fill of shopping, stroll or grab a cab to Jalan Alor, where you’ll discover a cluster of seafood restaurants and hawker stalls. This is one of the most popular parts of the city due to the huge range of Malay and Chinese cuisine on offer, and a fantastic introduction to this gastronomically gifted town.

Just outside of the Kuala Lumpur are the remarkable Batu Caves, a series of caverns which house important Hindu shrines. It is a popular attraction because the limestone fissures are incredibly atmospheric, and the shrines themselves are colourful and intricate.

If you’re with children it’s worth going to the KL Convention Centre and visiting the Aquaria. The Aquaria is one of the largest aquariums in the world, holding around 150 species of marine life, and is a fantastic day out for families. Other highlights for family fun involve scaling the Petronas Towers and wandering through its art gallery, its science centre, or perhaps even booking a show at the wonderful Petronas concert hall.

Best time to visit Kuala Lumpur

· Kuala Lumpur is always warm, with temperatures hovering within 25 and 35°C, but this side of Malaysia gets hit by two monsoon seasons. So the driest time of year in Kuala Lumpur is between May and July, and generally the best time of year to visit.

· October through to January is still a decent time of year to go, but you will experience occasional showers.

· Meanwhile, March to April is best avoided, as that is when the wet season truly hits KL.

Arriving in Kuala Lumpur by plane

· International travellers flying into Kuala Lumpur will be directed to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). There is the Subang Airport (SZB), but this is only really for domestic flights. Please note that the Kuala Lumpur International Airport has two terminals nicknamed KLIA1 and KLIA2, and sometimes they can be confused as two different airports but they are both a part of thesame airport: KUL. Airlines that fly into KUL include Emirates, AirAsia, AirAsia X, Malindo Air, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, SilkAir, Jetstar Asia, KLM, and Qatar Airways, among others.

· Though KUL is 45km outside of Kuala Lumpur, it is well connected to the city. As a new facility, passengers will find all the amenities they’ll need for transiting, such as free WiFi, cash machines, shopping outlets and plenty of places to eat.

· Darwin (DRW), Perth (PER), Melbourne (MEL), Adelaide (ADL) and Sydney (SYD) run routes directly to Kuala Lumpur.

Visa requirements

Transportation to city centre

· Depending on what type of taxi vehicle and how many passengers are in the cab, a journey into central KL should cost between 80-220MYR ($27-75).

· There are trains and buses available for transit into the city, or you can sort an airport transfer prior to arrival as another option.

Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur

· Bukit Bintang is great for access to attractions, entertainment, and finding a variety of accommodation options that range from budget hostels to luxury suites.

· Chinatown is great for a little grit, and is very lively. Perfect for the budget traveller you can find lots of great little eateries here, as well as colourful markets, and great bars.

Useful tips before you go

· Malaysia is a predominately Muslim country, and more conservative than what you may be used to. Generally it is recommended that you avoid public displays of affection whilst in the country.

· Make sure your taxis are metered, or you can end up paying much more than is fair.
