The airport has been owned by Queensland Airports Limited, along with Townsville Airport and Gold Coast Airport, since 2005. The air facility lies at an elevation of 1,121 ft (342 m) above mean sea level. It is equipped with one runway designated 16/34, with an asphalt surface measuring 2,560 m × 45 m (8,399 ft × 148 ft). The airport is situated 6.3 kilometres from Mount Isa.

The primary attraction is the Lawn Hill Gorge, formed by Lawn Hill Creek and fed by several freshwater springs from the limestone plateau. The camping area in Boodjamulla National Park is located on the bank of Lawn Hill Creek, with 20 sites and toilet and shower facilities.
Lake Julius - The formation of the reservoir Lake Julius is due to the construction of Julius Dam. The dam is a concrete multiple arch and a buttress type structure, with a total storage capacity of 107,500 megalitres.
Isa Rodeo - Isa Rodeo is a week-long rodeo festival in Mount Isa. Its attractions include Mardi Gras night with a parade and performances, the Bell & Moir Toyota Rodeo Ball, Rodeo Queen Quest (which raises money for local charities), Brophy's Boxing Troupe, and more.
