Discover Mildura

The Mildura Airport (MQL) is an important regional aviation facility for this part of Victoria, and though it is rather small, you will find everything you need here. There is access to free WiFi for all passengers, as well as a sweet café, and an interesting museum on World War 2.

You won’t find public transportation options serving the airport, so to traverse the 10km you will have to take a rental car, or a taxi. If you choose the latter expect to pay about $20-30 for the journey.

Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Regional Express (REX) operate flights to and from Mildura.

Why visit Mildura?

In the northern ranges of Victoria, lies the town of Mildura, a town that is known for its great leisure activities, its rolling vineyards, and its fruit orchards. Surrounded as it is by deep lakes and bisected by the Murray River, you can find a ton of watersports here, such as fishing, swimming, kayaking and waterskiing. If you’d prefer dry land, there is plenty of hinterland to hike through, or gold courses to tee-off on. Come to Mildura, the ‘Mediterranean of the Outback’.

Things to do in Mildura

One of the most famous things to do when you stay in Mildura is to hop on the Chaffey Trail, a walking tour that stops by the properties and business of the Chaffey Brothers, a 19th century duo who brought irrigation technology to this part of the country. It’s a great way to get acquainted with the layout of the town and learn a little about it, especially its journey from arid wilderness to fertile wine country.

Then engage in the multitude of activities in Mildura, such as the local markets in town, and at Red Cliffs, where you can pick up local produce and crafts. Or leave the shopping behind and book a leisurely boat tour down the languorous Murray River. Then spend the evening enjoying the bars and restaurants in Mildura by walking to Langtree Avenue, known affectionately as ‘Feast Street’.

For its natural attributes, strike out to Mungo National Park, where you can see traces of indigenous habitation going back thousands of years, and traipse through its rugged and unique terrain. The landscape here will feel as though you are touring the moon or a distant planet instead of the Outback, especially if you take a tour around the dry lake bed of Lake Mungo and see the enormous rising sand dunes that surround the area.

However, you cannot visit this region without embarking on an excursion around the area’s wineries. This is one of Victoria’s largest wine producing regions, and a great place to school your wine palate.
