Discover Ballina
The regional airport, located in Ballina, New South Wale (NSW), was renamed Ballina Byron Gateway Airport in 2005. It plays hosts to passengers from several leading airlines like Virgin Australia and Jetstar. The town of Ballina is home to some of Australia’s best beaches, rivers, rainforests and natural tourist attractions.
There are shuttle services connecting Byron Bay, and its surrounding areas, with the airport, such as Xcede, Byron Easybus, and Yamba Airport Shuttle. Getting around the small town on foot is simple, but if you choose not to walk, there is the usual option of hopping onto a local bus.
There are plenty of ocean-based activities to occupy your time in Byron Bay, such as kayaking alongside dolphins and turtles, diving and snorkelling, surfing and paddle boarding. While you’re there, don’t forget to schedule a visit to Cape Byron, one of the top scenic spots in Australia, where you get to discover the famous lighthouse and enjoy impressive views of the beaches, inlets, and the wide, blue Pacific Ocean.
On weekends, about five kilometres away from the airport at Ballina Shire, crafts or farmer markets are typically held. You can discover and sample fresh produce, including coffee, seasonal fruit and vegetables, and flowers, as well as local art and live music.
After that, visit the Big Prawn, Ballina’s representative on the “Australia’s big things” list. A cross between folk art and novelty architecture, the Big Prawn regularly attracts tourists, who stop by to take a photo before heading to one of the seafood stores across the road.
