Guinea, officially the Republic of Guinea and formerly known as French Guinea, is a country in West Africa. It is also sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry to distinguish it from Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. It is bordered by Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Mali to the north, and Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ivory Coast to the south. To its west is the Atlantic Ocean. Guinea’s capital and largest city is Conakry.

Where to go

Guinea, with little infrastructure, boasts of natural attractions and friendly locals. In the Moyenne Guinee region, or also known as Fouta Djallon, there are many hills and mountains that provide a nice backdrop as well as ideal spots for hiking. The city of Dalaba is located here, which is a small town referred to as the “Switzerland of Guinea” due to its relatively mild temperatures and picturesque views. The capital Conakry is located in the coastal region where there are beaches perfect for the country’s tropical climate. While in Conakry, also visit the National Museum here, which highlights different ethnic tribes in the country. The forested Loos Islands near Conakry is also a popular destination. In the sub-Sahelian region of Haute Guinee, on the other hand, is the National Park of the Upper Niger; while the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is found in the south-eastern region of Guinee Forestiere. This region is also home to the Toma, Lissi, and other ethnic groups with interesting ancient beliefs and rituals. Guinea is also home to the National Park of the Niokolo-Badiar, a savannah along the Senegal border.

From the main airport in Conakry, Guinea, travellers can book short-haul flights to Abidjan, Paris, Bamako, Dakar, Lome, and Casablanca. Lome, the capital and largest city of Togo in the Gulf of Guinea, is known for its exports of coffee, cocoa, copra, and palm kernels. Notable landmarks that can be found within Lome include the Lome Grand Market, the Togo National Museum, a fetish (voodoo) market, the Lome Cathedral, beaches, and the former wharf. Within the city, the colourful houses, large squares, and green gardens also offer a nice sight. There are also the remains of colonial architecture that can be found in Lome, including arcades and galleries, as well as the German Gothic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Long-haul destinations operated by flights from Conakry International Airport include Brussels and Istanbul. Brussels is the capital and largest city of Belgium. Notable for being a headquarters of a number of European institutions and a melting pot of cultures, Brussels plays an important role in Europe and still retains its own unique character. Exploring Brussels can be convenient for tourists who purchased the Brussels Card, which is offered at 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour variations, and includes a free guidebook free entry to museums, free use of public transportation, and discounts at different shops, restaurants, and attractions.
