Barra Car Hire are currently the only agency offering car rental from Barra Airport. Car hire must be arranged before arrival.
Petrol stations near Barra Airport
If you select a 'full to full' car rental agreement you will need to hand your car back with a full tank.
Petrol stations in the Outer Hebrides are few and far between. There is one petrol station in Castlebay, just over 15 minutes drive from the airport.
Driving around Barra Airport
The roads in Barra are a good mix of A-roads and B-roads, the latter of which are narrow one-track roads with regular passing places. If you're not used to driving on small roads like these, take your time and go slow. If necessary you can pull into passing places to let locals overtake. The A888 road circles the island, and is just over five minutes drive away from the airport.
Getting to your destination
Barra is a tiny island, just 14 miles in diameter, and is easy to explore by car.
The largest village on the island, Castlebay is where you will find most of the services you need during your trip. There's a post office, a shop, a petrol station, and a couple of traditional Scottish pubs.
It takes about 15 minutes to drive to Castlebay from Barra Airport. Car parking is widely available in the village, and most hotels have car parks for guests.
Home to the most westerly golf course in the UK, Cleat is a must visit for fans of the sport.
It takes just over 10 minutes to drive to Cleat from Barra Airport. This is quite a rural part of the island, so free parking is available nearly everywhere. As the majority of people get around Barra by car, most hotels and B&Bs have spaces for guest vehicles.
Isle of Vatersay
If you like peace and quiet, you'll love the Isle of Vatersay. Blessed with some truly brilliant coastal walks, it's a great place for some rural relaxation.
It takes around 25 minutes to drive to the Isle of Vatersay from Barra Airport. The two islands are connected by causeway. There are plenty of places to park your car while you go for a relaxing wander. Like hotels on neighbouring Barra, most of the accommodation in Vatersay has guest parking.
