Dili Airport

The Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (DIL) is the principal airport serving East Timor. Formerly called the Comoro International Airport, this facility was renamed for an East Timorese hero, the politician and first prime minister of the country, Nicolau Lobato.

This is the primary hub for the nation, but it has limited destinations. However, these are to much larger international hubs, such as Bali (DPS) in Indonesia, Darwin (DRW) in Australia, and the largest of all, Singapore’s Changi Airport (SIN).

The Dili airport is a small open-air facility, and the amenities here are pretty basic. There are only a few shopping and dining options, and these tend to have operating hours that coincide with the flight schedules. If you need to take out, or change over cash, or for amenities like internet access, medical services and tourist information, we recommend doing so from your departure airport, or waiting until you get into town.

The airlines operating in and out of Dili’s main airport are Air Timor, PT Nam Air, Sriwijaya Air, Hahn Air Systems, and SilkAir. From Australia, you can fly directly from Darwin (DRW) to Dili with AirNorth. You can connect to Darwin or Singapore through all major airports in Australia.

Travel Information

·         Thrifty has an office at the airport where you can book a car, but given that there is only one rental agency, it may be better to organise a vehicle ahead of time by booking online and in advance. Once you get your car, head east through one roundabout and then turn left onto Avenue President Nicolau Lobato for just over a kilometre, and then turn right and then left to get to Dili central.

·         Passengers can find buses outside the airport, around a five minute walk away, by the roundabout near the main road. A single fare only costs 0.25USD (30 cents), which is by far the cheapest way into the city. If you’d rather not catch a bus or a taxi, you can find private airport transfers through Skyscanner that might suit you better if it your first time to Dili.

·         Taxis are very cheap in East Timor, even in the capital, and passengers will find that once they disembark, they can grab a taxi for roughly 5USD ($6.60).
