Cheap Flights to Equatorial Guinea
Flights to Equatorial Guinea
An example of the paradox of plenty, the Western African country of Equatorial Guinea holds one or even more of the many valuable and consequential resources today, although ironically, like its neighbours, the country thrives to break free from poverty and other underlying problems that tries to hold it down. This small nation faces various tragic and heartbreaking problems like hunger and starvation, political instability, prostitution, and educational lags albeit its prominence in oil production, human resources, and partly, tourism. But then, what are the gives? What is the silver lining behind the dark clouds? That's where tourism comes in.
Interestingly, the country is divided into two parts – the insular region and mainland region, plus a separate island under its wing. The mainland is found nestled between the countries of Gabon and Cameroon, while the insular region is mainly known for the Bioko Island, sitting in the gulf of Guinea and Annobon, and from those two parts comes hidden riches that have been capturing tourists from around the world.
What to see & do
The country, being rich in natural resources, has maximised its tourism sector in the recent years to bolster the economy and support the many thriving citizens of the nation. Much of the sight-seeing activities can be done in the island of Bioko and in the town of Bata, in the mainland region of Rio Muni, as well as in the capital of Malabo.
Bata – The capital of Rio Muni is a clean, charming town with wide streets, and colourful buildings, completely complementing the bustling atmosphere and the lively citizens. Bata has a dilapidated colonial charm that is appealing enough, while markets, restaurants, and bars keep you busy during mid-days and nights after the day tours in the morning. If looking for more, the coasts to the north and south of the town holds some of the more beautiful beach strips in the country, conveniently secluded and truly spectacular.
Monte Alen National Park – Just a stone's throw away from the town of Bata is one of West-Central Africa's best-kept secrets: the Monte Alen National Park in Equatorial Guinea. A protected sanctuary of flora and fauna that is well-maintained and accessible through trails, and complete with camp sites to spend the night in, the Monte Alen National Park can be the highlight of your trip! Trails from the starting point lead to hidden lakes where it is possible to spot some primates, such as mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. Forest elephants, as well as crocodiles can also be spotted from time to time.
Ureca in the island of Bioko – Even though Ureca lacks tourist infrastructure, its unapologetic beauty is captivating that many travellers are still intrigued to go to this island, some 80km south of the capital. Egg-laying turtles can be seen on the beaches here, and a dedicated Spanish conservation groups have been present since 1996 to protect these endangered reptiles from exploitation in the area.
How to get around within Equatorial Guinea
It is best to get around the country and the city on a planned and scheduled ride, or through public transportation, instead of riding private rental cars or semi-private vehicles such as taxis, due to the fact that military checkpoints are all over the place, especially in the city centre of Malabo and in the outskirts of the country towards the coasts. They can be very insistent, and they can provide a little more hassle than necessary. Some of them even ask for bribes – while others are downright hostile that they can hold you up longer. If you still want to venture on driving, do be careful and make sure that you know the ground rules and regulations in the place.
