The Dusseldorf International Airport (DUS) is the key aviation facility in this cosmopolitan German city, and a large European flights hub. Conveniently situated a short 8km distance from Dusseldorf’s CBD, you can easily cross the distance with rail services, the Metro, public buses, or on private shuttles. Taxis can also be taken from just outside the terminal buildings, and run you into town for around 20EUR ($30).

Things to do in Dusseldorf

Welcoming in so many visitors from all over the world, Dusseldorf is well prepared with its entertainment. There are impressive museums that you can spend days touring, such as the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection that has three locations over the city displaying different mediums in of art. Then there is the Kunstpalast, a gallery that traces art back to 200 BCE, right up until present day, making it a true journey for any aesthetic.

Then go outside and tour the Old Town of Dusseldorf, which has kept its charm even as the outskirts of the city have modernised. Watch the world go by in the large town square (Marktplatz), see the Town Hall, the Castle Tower, and duck into a few of the museums around here. Little streets leading off from this part of town will take you to quaint boutiques, souvenir shops, and delightful restaurants where you can try the hearty German cuisine.

The best way to see Dusseldorf’s more modern personality is to take a walk around the old port, where you can see Frank Gehry’s striking set of modern buildings next to the Rheinturm Tower.

However, if you’d rather find a little peace and quiet from the bustle of the city streets you can find it in the gorgeous landscaped grounds of the Hofgarten, or in the serene parkland of Nordpark’s Japanese Garden, the most Zen place you’ll find in Dusseldorf.

Best time to visit Dusseldorf

·         The summer (June-August) weather in Dusseldorf is easily the most pleasant time of year to come to this city, as you can bask in perfect 24°C weather. However, don’t discount spring and autumn, which hold onto as much as the summer heat as they can, with extra warm days still climbing to 14-19°C. And then there is the winter, which is absolutely freezing, but comes with the reward of gluhwein stalls at the Christmas markets, and a blanket of snow.

·         As a long-haul flight, you will have to stopover at least once, if not twice to get to Dusseldorf. Expect your flight to be diverted through cities like London (LHR), Paris (CDG) and Hong Kong (HKG).
