Things to do in Jakarta

Make your way to the older part of the city, called Old Batavia, where you can see a delightful mixture of Dutch colonial buildings blend with a distinctly Chinese atmosphere. There are lots of little boutiques that make this place great souvenir shopping. The streets also shelter little museums, galleries showcasing local art, and small eateries you can grab a delicious snack in. If you’re looking for something truly special to bring home though, make sure you add Surabaya to your must-sees, as that is the street for antiques, and you can locate some real finds in this part of town.

Next on your itinerary should be Monas, where you can visit the National Museum of Indonesia, which tells of the history of the city, its indigenous people, and the colonists that settled there. Nearby, is the culmination of that history in the form of a huge monument, that was erected in honour of the struggle of the Indonesians to free themselves from colonial rule.

To relax, locals and tourists alike make their way to the waterfront of an evening, and in particular to Ancol, where there are a variety of activities for every age group. Discover the nightclubs, golf courses, themed rides, and even swimming pools, all located in this one area.
