Discover Kununurra

The East Kimberley Regional Airport (KNX) is also known as the Kununurra Airport, and is an important regional hub for residents and travellers looking to fly in and out of Kununurra. You won’t find a plethora of amenities here, but you will find a café and bar, and car hire facilities.

There are a few shuttle companies you can utilise and book to drive you the 3.5km from the airport into town, or you can hop in a taxi. The journey will cost a fare of about $15.

Kununurra is a delightful town in the northern reaches of Western Australia, and serves as a gateway to the stunning Kimberley region of the country. This town is also not short on beauty: it is situated right in the middle of pastureland and fruit farming country, making it a green and lush district. Beyond exploring the charm of this small town, you can strike out and enjoy the outdoor attractions of this lovely part of Australia.

Things to do in Kununurra

Within the town’s borders, you should spend some time in the Our Land Gallery, that puts a spotlight on Aboriginal Art, and there is also the Lovell Diversion Gallery that looks at art from other local artists. And for shopping, you can hit up Paddy’s Markets every Sunday, which includes handicrafts and locally sourced produce.

Then hike the summit of Kelly’s Knob, where you can see Kununurra from above, the surrounding hinterland and farms, it is one of the best views in the area, and will really allow you to situate yourself.

Then drive out of the town to really see what the Kimberley region has to offer. Those sporty adventurers should head for Lake Kunukurra where you can engage in watersports from swimming to water skiing. The Sleeping Buddha and Elephant Rock are right by this lake too. Or instead, visit the spectacular Black Rock Falls towards Wyndham and see this incredible attraction, just don’t forget to bring a picnic!

Best time to visit Kununurra

·         Because Kununurra is generally very hot, with highs hovering between 30 and 40°C, and lows sitting at 15-25°C. Generally, the evenings are quite cool, and it is always advised that you bring a jumper, and layers to peel off when the sun rises again. The wet season is between November and February, and they aren’t the best months for sightseeing. Booking a trip outside of these months though will offer you plenty of chances to tour the gorgeous countryside.
