Driving around Kununurra Airport

Kununurra Airport offers easy access to Highway 1 which heads through Kununurra to the border with the Northern Territory and south west towards Durack, Warmun and Halls Creek. Kununurra is a small town and, despite there being just one main road to and from the airport, there’s rarely any congestion.

Western Australia is one the world’s largest states, bigger than the whole of western Europe, and the distances can be a little tricky to get your head around. What looks like a short stretch of uninterrupted road on the map, could take you the best part of a day in reality, and offer very little in the way of fuel or food stops.

For this reason, it’s always a good idea to travel prepared and with essential provisions. These include food and water for a day or two, a spare tyre, tools to change a tyre and a spare canister of petrol. If you do end up stranded in Western Australia, you may find yourself without phone signal and waiting for some time before someone can come to your rescue.

It’s also worth checking road information before you travel as, especially during the rainy season, roads can become unpassable. Consider hiring a 4WD if you’re going to be travelling off road and stay alert on all roads for wildlife.

Lake Kununurra boasts some great birdlife, picturesque picnic spots and regular boat trips up to Ord Dam while Mirima National Park offers hiking trails and fantastic views, particularly at sunset when the orange rocks, for which the park is famous, are at their most colourful.

The town of Kununurra is just five minutes’ drive from Kununurra Airport, taking Highway 1 eastwards. There are no traffic lights in the town and very little traffic. Drivers will also be pleased to find that all on street and carparks in the town are available to use free of charge.

Warmun

Warmun is a tiny town on the road from Kununurra to Purnululu National Park. It’s an Aboriginal managed community, famous for its internationally renowned artists. Warmun is around two hours’ drive from Kununurra Airport, taking Highway 1 south west. The town is tiny, traffic free and has plenty of parking.

Wyndham is located on the Cambridge Gulf and used to be a gold mining town back in the 19th century. These days there are a number of attractions for visitors in Kimberley’s most northerly town. You can visit the Koolama shipwreck, the remains of a boat bombed during Japanese air raids and still sitting in the mud flats by the town. There’s also Wyndham Museum where you can learn more about the town’s history and Wyndham Farm where you can get involved in feeding the crocodiles.

It takes about 70 minutes to drive from Kununurra Airport to Wyndham, taking Highway 1 west and then the Great Northern Highway north. If you’ve hired a 4WD and weather conditions are favourable, you can take the more scenic route via Parry Creek Road.
