Things to do in Seoul

Begin your tour of the city by visiting Gwanghwamun, a city landmark and the gate to Gyeongbokgung, the 14^th century palace of the last ruling house; the Joseon Dynasty. If you love the tour here, make sure you fit in a quick trip to the Changdeok Palace, which boasts the stunning Secret Garden, particularly beautiful in the autumn months. Another item that ranks among Seoul’s must-sees is the Bukchon Village. Step back in time by walking down streets flanked by traditional wooden houses (or hanok), and sit and enjoy the neighbourhood in one of its quaint cafes.

Between the old and the new is the War Memorial of Korea, a museum that charts the history of the Korean War, and how it has impacted the country. It is worth coupling that trip with the National Museum of Korea, to gain context on the country’s history as a whole.

For shoppers, you can hit the malls and high-end shops of the Coex Mall or the Shinsegae Department Store, or head instead to the antique district Insadong. If you’d rather test your stomach’s mettle instead of your wallet’s, then Gwangjang Market is filled with vendors selling all kinds of delicious local street food.

Best time to visit Seoul

· Autumn (September-November) is probably the best time to visit Seoul, the weather is temperate from 10-26°C, and the foliage bursts into a riot of reds, yellows and oranges.

· Spring is also pleasant, with averages of 8-22°C, and lower prices at hotels.

· Summers are muggy, hot, and can be very wet. Whilst winter can be very cold, and snowy, so unless you plan to head to a ski resort, is best avoided.

· A cappuccino in the city of Seoul should come to about 5000KRW ($5.90).

Arriving in Seoul by plane

· There are two main aviation hubs in Seoul, Incheon International Airport (ICN), or Gimpo International Airport (GMP). The ICN facility is the one most flights from Australia will fly into. Airlines that fly to Seoul, are Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, AirAsia, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, British Airways, Etihad Airways, British Airways, Cebu Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, Japan Airlines, United, Air China, Air Canada, Delta, American Airlines, Garuda Indonesia among others.

· Incheon Airport is roughly 27km from the centre, and Gimpo about 15km. Both have excellent links into the city, and each facility has free WiFi, restaurants, duty-free shops, ATMs, and bureau de change counters.

· There are direct flights available from Sydney (SYD) and connecting flights from all other major cities in the country.

Visa requirements

· If you hold an Australian passport, you will not need a visa to enter South Korea, but you will need at least 6 months validity on your passport. Check the latest updates and information on your eligibility for entry into South Korea on the government’s foreign affairs website, here.

Transportation to city centre

· Hopping in a taxi from Incheon will come to about 55,000-75,000KRW ($65-88), or 30,000KRW ($35) from Gimpo.

· There are trains, subways and buses that run between the airports and the downtown areas, or you can arrange an airport transfer through us before you fly.

Where to stay in Seoul

· Jongno-Gu or Insadong is the neighbourhood that close to many of the city’s historical attractions, and makes for convenient access to the palaces and the Bukchon area of town.

· Gangnam is for high fliers that want luxury hotels, fine dining, and a good bar scene.

· Myeongdong is the neighbourhood you’ll want to stay in if you’re a shopper or a night owl. There’s a decent range of hotels for all budgets in this part of town.

Useful tips before you go

· Bowing is a polite way of greeting people, and you do so with a short bow, eyes closed, and head directed downwards. Bowing is supposed to be deeper if you are meeting someone important.

· Tipping is not standard in South Korea, though you will find some larger establishments will add on a 10% gratuity.
