Serving the Fraser Coast, the Hervey Bay Airport (HVB) is a prominent aviation facility in the region, and has seen numerous upgrades over the past 10 years. If you transit through this airport you will be able to connect to free WiFi, utilise the visitor information centre, take cash out of the ATM, and grab a bite to eat at the café and bar.  

There are shuttle services, and car hire facilities serving the airport, as well as taxis. However, be prepared to pay around $50 for the 15km taxi journey.

Why visit Hervey Bay?

Hervey Bay is one of the most charming towns in Australia, with the town borders softening into long tracts of golden sand, and looking out onto the deep blue Pacific. There is access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fraser Island, and plenty of opportunities to see gentle Humpback whale pods pass through the waters just around Hervey Bay. The town itself is down to earth and delightful, with lots of great eateries and bars, as well as sweet hotels.

Things to do in Hervey Bay

Within Hervey Bay itself, you can hire a bike and cycle around this small town, or put on your walking shoes and stroll down the lovely Esplanade of the town, where you can duck in and out of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars that line the 14km stretch of waterfront. Then walk down the Urangan Pier, a landmark jetty that has been standing for almost 100 years, and a great place to sit and enjoy the sea views.

Then drop by the markets that pop in and out of Hervey Bay with regularity, selling goods from local artisans, including handmade clothing. Or pack a picnic and head for the lovely Botanic Gardens situated in town.

If you visit Hervey Bay in the winter season, you will be treated to the migration of the majestic Humpback whales that swim through the waters here.

Book a trip to Lady Elliot Island, probably the best spot in this region for the coral landscapes hidden beneath its waters. You can snorkel around this area, and come across the magical Manta Rays, or the good-natured Sea Turtles.

Lastly, with Fraser Island so close to Hervey Bay, it’d be a crime not to make for its pristine white sands, freshwater lakes, warm ocean waves, and protected rainforests which all beckon exploration.
