Discover Falkland Islands

Just off the coast of Argentina, Islas Malvinas or Falkland Islands suggests a curious slice of Great Britain down in the Atlantic. Its 2,583 inhabitants living like any other Brit in an almost remote island consisting of 700 small islands and two main islands. And whatever happens, they got each other.

The islands have faced several changes in leadership, passing powers from France, Spain, Britain, and currently, Argentina, but from controversy to controversy, war after war, its people held on to what they do best: survive. And while the country has experienced disputes over who's going to administer them, they remained at peace and one – making their country-territory one of the most liquid states in the world. More so, the abundance of nature's wonders and the line of gastronomical exploits here seem endless, all in peace, all in beauty, all in serenity.

East Falkland – East Falkland is the largest island in the archipelago, holding 85% of the country's population. Some visitors make excellent day trips from Stanley, which is the capital of the country, with its beautiful and colourful seaside town and a ramshackle assemblage of buildings – all British – while a number of destinations and accommodations are worth exploring for a longer period of time. Most of these destinations are accessible by road, but for those saving on time or staying on the islands for a short stint, there are available and selected locations depending on the travellers' preferences. Some of the most beautiful points here are Bertha's Beach, a white-sand beach with abundant marine life and aves (bird species); the Bull Point, a photogenic location with sightings of Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins, waterfowl, wading birds, and see lions; Cape Bougainville, Darwin, Fitzroy, Elephant Beach, Kelp Point, and many more. Everywhere in the East and in the island itself, visitors may catch a curious look at various fauna and flora particularly birds and fowls.

West Falkland – Home to almost the rest of the population not living in the East, the West is more inhabited by wildlife than men. It holds the most spectacular scenery in the archipelago, with cliffs and shores worth taking photos of. More so, the West presents itself as a “camp site”, where adventurous souls can explore with their heart's desire. Some of the more popular destinations in the area include Fox Bay, Crooked Inlet Farm, Little Chartres, Ports Edgar, Howard, Stephens, and Shallow Bay. Like in the East, the presence of fauna and flora are high here, with various species of penguins and other animals surrounding the area.

Outer Islands – Scattered around and outside the two main islands of Falkland, the beauty of the outer islands lie on its scenery, its wildlife, and its beaches that are unlike any other in the world. And while the two main islands stand for themselves – these outer islands come as the highlight of the trip for many tourists and visitors. Some of the more popular islands include Bleaker Island, where three species of penguin and many other smaller birds and a variety of waterfowl can be found, Carcass Island, Pebble Island, Weddell Island, and Sea Lion Island, known for its sightings of elephant seals, penguins, birds of prey, and of course, sea lions.

The main islands, particularly in East Falkland, can be travelled through taxis and Land Rovers, all available for rent. Taxis can be hired for travel throughout the town, even to the airport, while Land Rovers are preferred for travels elsewhere than Stanley, especially those dirt roads or boggy mud streams. Walking is also preferred especially in the coasts, and cruising by boat is usually intended for island hopping. The outer islands can be travelled through the Falkland Islands Government Air Service in small planes.
