Flights from Semera

Located in the First Administrative Zone in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, Semera Airport is a small public airport serving its namesake city, Semera. It is currently operated by the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise, and was established together with the city-community of Semera, which is set to replace Asaita as the capital of the Afar Region.

Where to go

Domestic destinations from Semera Airport include the cities of Addis Ababa, Mekele, and Shire, which all give insights on what Ethiopia really is, on the ground level. These cities project the rich culture, tradition, and history of the Ethiopians, providing travellers with knowledge and of course, new discoveries.

Addis Ababa – The capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, or sometimes Addis Abeba, is found at the very heart of Ethiopia. It is the largest city in the country, and is the main international hub for travellers and foreigners wishing to visit the city. Being the gateway of the world to Ethiopia, the city has been developed with high standards, highlighting the traditions and culture of the Ethiopians, while little by little, embracing the new age and modernity.

Mekele – One of Ethiopia's principal economic and education centres, Mekele is Ethopia's northern gem. Found in the Tigray region up north, the city is considered a special economic zone, and has been known for its local industries focusing on engineering. If visiting the city, make sure to check on the open market so as to get the feel of living in the area.

Shire – Another northern city found in the Tigray region, Shire is so called the “House of Trinity” and is a booming city centre in the recent years.

Currently, the airport only hosts local flights to the above-mentioned cities of Addis Ababa, Mekele, and Shire, so travellers are advised to fly down from Semera to airports located in these destinations to get short haul flights. The Addis Ababa International Airport is the biggest and busiest airport in Ethiopia, so there will be no problem in catching and looking for the best destinations from there. The Mekele Airport is another suggested airport, while the Shire Airport should be taken if going to the Tigray region.

Similarly, long haul flights should be taken from the major international airports in Ethiopia. The Addis Ababa International Airport tops the list since there is a direct flight from the city of Semera to here, but of course, travellers should check on the other airports that are more convenient for them. Suggested places to visit are the European countries of Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, and the Asian countries of China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. More so, travellers may also visit the countries of the Americas.
