Travel requirements to Nigeria for Australian citizens

If you're travelling from Australia to Nigeria, the first step is understanding the visa requirements. Securing the right visa makes your entry into Nigeria as smooth as possible. Let's explore all the necessary travel documents, visa types, and health requirements for Australian citizens visiting Nigeria.

Nigeria visa requirements for Australian citizens

  • Electronic visitor visa

    Travellers need a visa to visit Nigeria for Business or Tourism. An eVisa is the fastest and easiest way of obtaining a visa for Nigeria because travellers can submit their application and supporting documents online. Once the application is approved, travellers receive their eVisa confirmation electronically.
The UK government is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for non-visa travellers starting in 2025. This system, similar to the US ESTA, will require most visitors to obtain an ETA or eVisa before travelling to the UK. The ETA is a digital permit linked to the traveller's passport, costing £10, and allows multiple entries into the UK for up to six months at a time over a two-year period.
ETA rollout schedule:
  • From January 8, 2025: All non-European nationals will need an ETA.
  • From April 2, 2025: European citizens will also require an ETA.
  • Applications: Open for non-European nationals on November 27, 2023, and for European citizens on March 5, 2025.
Who needs an ETA?
It will cover all non-European and European nationals (except British and Irish citizens).
Exemptions:
British and Irish passport holders, those with British Overseas Territories passports, existing visa holders, and individuals with permission to live, work, or study in the UK do not need to apply for an ETA.
Restrictions:
While the ETA permits stays for tourism, business, short-term studies, or visiting friends and family for up to six months, it does not allow activities like getting married, claiming benefits, residing in the country through frequent visits, or self-employed work.

  • Currency declaration for travellers carrying USD 10,000 or more is required

    Travellers arriving in Nigeria who are carrying USD 10,000 or more in total value must complete an electronic currency declaration form before arrival. This requirement applies to both foreign nationals and Nigerian passport holders. Travellers carrying less than USD 10,000.00 are not required to complete the currency declaration.

  • Mandatory proof of accommodation

    Travellers must have proof of accommodation during their stay in Nigeria. If travellers will be hosted by a relative or friend, the host must be an American Samoan Status Holder or a legal resident.

  • Mandatory travel declaration before entering Nigeria

    All foreign nationals entering Nigeria must complete a travel declaration (landing card) to pre-process their arrival by providing travel and passport details. Travellers must complete this form online. Landing cards are processed instantly, and travellers will receive a QR code and email upon completion. Travellers are also required to complete an exit card when departing Nigeria.

  • Recommended vaccinations for Nigeria

    Travellers should consider: -Yellow Fever vaccination; -Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines; -Typhoid vaccine for visits to smaller cities or rural areas; -Meningococcal vaccine for areas that are part of the meningitis belt during the dry season; -Routine vaccines including Polio and Measles.   • Passport validity

    Travellers need a valid passport to enter Nigeria. The traveller's passport must remain valid for at least 6 months after the traveller arrives in Nigeria. The passport must have at least 2 blank pages.  It is mandatory to ensure your passport meets this requirement to avoid any issues at the border.
