Where to hire a car at Victoria Airport

A number of car hire companies operate at Victoria Airport. Avis, Budget, Hertz and National all have office located in the arrivals hall, directly opposite the Information Desk. Visitors can also book car hire with Enterprise. Enterprise doesn’t have a desk at Hamilton Airport and visitors need to arrange a pick-up at the time of booking. The pick-up area for off-airport car hire companies can be found across the walkway at the arrivals end of the terminal building.

The closest petrol station to Victoria Airport is called Clair Downey Service Station. It’s just over five minutes’ drive from the airport and located on Canora Road.

Driving around Victoria Airport

Victoria Airport is situated on a peninsula. Willingdon Road is the main road passing in front of the airport. Westbound, it connects to route 17A, which runs north to south along the west coast of the peninsula. Eastbound it leads to route 17, a highway which runs north to south along the east coast of the peninsula and down to Victoria city. At Saanich, route 17 offers connections to route 1, a major road that crosses much of Canada. Victoria is part of Vancouver Island, with mainland Canada accessed by car ferry.
Canada and British Columbia boast well-maintained roads. Cars drive on the right hand side of the road and speed limits are in kilometres per hour. Road rules specific to the province include stopping when school buses have their red lights flashing to allow children to get on and off the bus and allowing priority to the first vehicle at a four way intersection.
Winter comes to British Columbia from late October to April and can bring fog, snow and ice to the roads. You’ll need to make sure your car is equipped for winter weather and check local road reports for advice on travel.

It takes around 30 minutes to travel from Victoria Airport to Victoria city centre. Route 17 provides the most direct route. Street parking is available throughout the city but parking in one of the city’s parkades can prove cheaper at around $12 for a full day’s parking. The first hour of parking is always free and it’s also free of charge during evenings and on Sundays. Street parking usually costs between $1.50 and $3 depending on which zone you park in and there are often time restrictions.


Metchosin is a small town, located south of Victoria Airport. It’s home to a number of sheep farms and artists’ home studios. It’s a great place for getting out and about in nature, with miles of hiking trails, beautiful pebble beaches and great bird watching opportunities. The Galloping Goose Trail provides a cycling and hiking route all the way through Metchosin and Witty’s Lagoon nature area is also close by.
It takes around 40 minutes to drive from Victoria Airport to Metchosin. Drivers can take route 17, route 1 and then route 1A down to the small town. There is lots of free street parking available in the town.


Sooke is located southwest of Victoria Airport. It’s a small, harbour town surrounded by rainforests and unspoiled beaches. The rugged coastline is great for exploring, the Sooke Region Museum offers insight into the town’s rich history and visitors can also enjoy eating at one of the town’s slow-food restaurants.
It takes just under an hour to drive from Victoria Airport to Sooke, taking route 17 south, then route 1 before picking up route 14, a scenic route which winds through forest and along the coastline.
