Riga International Airport

Riga International Airport (RIX)

The largest, and most comprehensive airport in Latvia, the Riga International Airport (RIX) serves the lovely city of Riga, and is the best point to arrive in, or depart from this country due to its excellent list of direct destination routes. This airport is the primary hub for the flag carrying airline, Air Baltic, and a big operating base for Hungary’s low-cost carrier, Wizz Air.

You’ll find that this is a pretty modern facility, having been built in the 1970s, and revamped in the early 2000s, there are decent facility across the airport’s terminal buildings. There is an information desk, payphones, a post office, and free WiFi access throughout the airport, which helps with getting situated, or contacting family and friends. There are also ATMS, and currency exchange services that you can utilise before entering the country, or just before you leave, and a pharmacy you can take advantage of if need be.

As for entertainment, there are a number of restaurants, bars and cafes that offer local and international cuisine that you can dine in if you’re hankering for a snack, as well as a wide selection of shops you can duck in while you’re waiting for your flight. In particular, the duty-free section offers a decent range of items you can pick up if you are flying internationally.

Routes to Riga are operated by airlines that include Air Baltic, Finnair, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Emirates, Aeroflot, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, China Eastern, LOT, and many more.

Travel Information

·         The airport is only 10km from the city centre, and the drive in is fairly straightforward, and should only take you 15-20 minutes in total. Take the P133, then merge onto the Kārļa Ulmaņa gatve/A10, and the turn left onto Kalnciema iela, and continue on that road until you cross the bridge into the central part of town. Whilst you can rent a car when you arrive in the agencies at the airport, it might be faster, and less of a hassle to book your car in advance and online with Skyscanner's search tool.

·         Both buses and shuttles run into town from the airport. These services come very regularly, and only take around 30 minutes travel time. The cost of a one-way fare to Riga is 2EUR ($3) though you can find coaches to other destinations within the Baltic region of Europe. If you’re feeling a bit skittish about using the public transport, you can book an airport transfer that can meet you when you arrive.

·         You will find the taxi rank just outside the terminal, and a journey into town will usually take you less than 20 minutes. The fare should come to approximately 8-10EUR ($11-14) to go to the centre of Riga.

Please note that information is correct as of January 2017.
