Portland Airport

The Portland International Airport (PDX) is the key aviation hub for the popular city of Portland in Oregon, the north-western state in America. The airport accounts for almost all of the flight travel into this state, and accommodates almost 20 million travellers each year. This trendy city is linked to almost all the major cities across the United States, and offers international flights out to Asia, Central America, and Europe. Located only 12km from the city centre, this airport is close to Portland central and boasts excellent links into town.

There is one major terminal building, and within this you will find plenty of cash machines, foreign exchange services and one full-service bank. There is free WiFi with comprehensive coverage throughout the airport, making communication with your friends and family, or any destination contacts very easy. There’s also a post office, and payphones you can utilise.

Passengers will have a plethora of food options to choose from, including popular food chains that incorporate healthy and fast-food options. There are also diners, cafes, kiosks, coffee bars, and pubs you can duck into whilst in transit.

The shopping includes high street brands that cover cosmetics, electronics, fashion, alcohol, souvenirs, handicrafts, gourmet food, and sportswear. You will also find a newsagency, a bookstore, a day spa, and a barber’s.

As Oregon is on the United States’ western coast, flying to Portland from Australia offers up a lot of options when it comes to choosing a carrier. Choices include Qantas, Hawaiian Airlines, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Delta, Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand, China Airlines, Fiji Airways, United, and American Airlines.

Travel Information

·         There is a dedicated Car Rental Centre for travellers looking to hire a car on arrival, though this is off-site. You can request pick-ups and drop-offs at the airport itself if you book your car online and in advance. You should be able to get to the city centre in around 20-25 minutes with the usual traffic. Just get on the I-205 S and then take the I-84/US-30 W to SE Morrison Bridge. Take the exit towards the city centre, and you will cruise into Portland central.

·         There is a light rail service run by TriMet MAX that operates from Portland’s international airport right into the centre of town in about 40 minutes. The bonus here is that it will only cost you 2.50USD ($3.25) for a one-way fare. There are also several bus and coach services that leave from the airport, and out to cities all over Oregon should you need to travel outside of Portland. If you’d like to take a private transfer, you can often find the best deals online.

·         Taxis are often the most convenient way to travel, and you can pick one up right outside the terminal, though be aware the cost of this transport is usually about 35USD ($45), not including tip.
