Dunedin Airport

Dunedin International Airport (DUD)

The Dunedin International Airport (DUD) services the city of Dunedin, and the principal city in New Zealand’s remarkable Otago region in the South Island. Open for business in 1962, this airport sees roughly 70,000 passengers pass through its gates, and fly to one of its four direct destinations.

This is a pretty compact facility, but it has all the main amenities that passengers require when they travel. There is a free WiFi service (that is capped at 30 minutes or 1000MB), and payphones you can use if you need to communicate with friends or family. Though if you can access free internet through the VIP Koru Lounge. There is an ATM at the front entrance, and two duty-free stores you can spend that dispensed cash in, and you can also find a newsagency and a gift store.

If you’re hungry, you can go to the food court, where there is a BLD fast food service, and three café/kiosks where you can grab a quick snack or a pick-me-up coffee. Added extras include a play area for kids, and massage chairs you can use to relax in before you fly.

There is also a sculpture outside the airport, called Southern Man, created by the artist Sam Mahon. As you’re exiting the airport, don’t forget to stroke the horse’s nose, which is said to bring you good luck!

From Australia, the only carrier flying into this airport directly is Virgin Australia, though you can find connecting routes with Air New Zealand, China Airlines, Qantas, and Emirates.

Travel Information

·         There are six rental car companies operating out of Dunedin, though to get the most for your money it is best to book a rental car online. The airport is 30km from the city, and all you need do is get on the Airport Road, onto the State Highway 86, and then turn left onto SH 1 and stay on this road until you see signs for the city.

·         There are shuttles that run to and from the airport and the city, but no public bus services, expect a journey to cost you upwards of 30NZD ($28) though this will vary depending on the size of the group travelling, and whether the company charges per person). If you’d like to have your transport ready for you when you arrive, we advise organising an airport transfer ahead of time.

·         Taxis do service this airport, with a typical journey taking you around 30 minutes, and the fare coming to around 90NZD ($85).
