Bengaluru Airport

The Kempe Gowda International Airport is an international airport serving the Indian city of Bengaluru (Bangalore) located some four kilometres south of Devanahalli, and 40 kilometres from the central business district of Bengaluru. The airport is the first known airport in India which was constructed through a public-private partnership, established and formally inaugurated in 2008. It is the fourth busiest airport in the country after Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, with an overall passenger traffic of 12.87 million per annum. Awarded as India's ‘Best airport,’ the Kempe Gowda International Airport serves as a hub for Kingfisher Airlines (until October 2012) and is a focus city for Air India, Jet Airways, JetLite, IndiGO, SpieceJet, GoAir, and AirAsia India. The airport connects the city of Bengaluru to 50 destinations across India and the rest of the world, with 31 airlines both serving international and domestic flights.

Currently, the airport runs its flights on a single asphalt runway measuring some 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), and covers at least 500 air traffic movements per day. There are plans to further expand the airport so as to handle 20 million passengers in 2015, and 55 million passengers annually by 2029-2030.

The Kempe Gowda International Airport has two terminals. One aptly named as the Passenger terminal, is the main hub for travellers departing and arriving to and from the city. The passenger terminal is a single, fully air conditioned, four-level building capable of handling both international and domestic operations. The basement houses the retail facilities, rest areas, and other services, while the baggage reclaim, arrival and departure hubs are separated vertically for ease of access and operation. The passenger terminal can handle 20 million people per annum with 38 gates, 20 aero-bridges, and 18 remote bus bays. Check-in counters and self check-in counters, or so called CUTE (Common Use Terminal Equipment) enabled check-in counters, are set to serve passengers of the airport as well.

The other terminal, dubbed as the Hajj terminal, is an exclusive terminal for Hajj Pilgrims. The Hajj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, and a mandatory religious duty for Muslims. The Hajj terminal can handle 600 passengers at a time, and is built with designated prayer rooms for men and women and separate hot water facilities for Wadu (cleansing before prayers).

Services and Facilities

The Kempe Gowda International Airport provides its passengers state-of-the-art facilities and services for their convenience. Aside from buggy services for persons with reduced mobility, women and children, or senior citizens, a dedicated zone is reserved for drop-off and pick-up when arriving or leaving the airport. A calling facility is also installed at the drop-off area to call for assistance from respective airlines. Business lounges, VIP Lounges, restaurants and retail shops are also available at the airport for passengers to utilize.
