Travellers looking to explore the lovely landscape of southwest France, or northern Spain can do so by flying into the Biarritz Pays Basque Airport (BIQ). Built in the 1950s, this airport now handles over one million people travelling through its terminal buildings. It is situated 4km from Biarritz, 6km from Bayonne, both cities in France, and 47km from the Spanish coastal city of San Sebastian.
The airport has a good range of facilities too; there is accessible WiFi allowing you to connect to friends and family. There is also a small medical centre, an executive lounge, conference rooms, and a serviced information desk you can utilise when you arrive or depart from this hub.
For shopping options, there is a Relay newsagency selling reading materials, confectionary, drinks, snacks, and travel accessories. And there is a Quicksilver shop selling summer-weather accessories, such as swimsuits, sunglasses, and beach bags.
From Australia, you can book codeshare and connecting flights with a number of airlines, including British Airways, Air France, Emirates, Iberia, China Eastern, Qantas, Vietnam Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.
· To drive the 4km to Biarritz (a quick 10 minute journey), you must get onto the D810 to the D260, and then onto the Voie de Maysonnabe into town. For Bayonne, take the D810 and exit on Allées Paulmy. Expect this drive to take around 15 minutes. If you want to organise your vehicle ahead of time, book a car with Skyscanner online. However, if you’d rather wait until you land, you can find six respected rental car agencies within the airport itself.
· There are buses that go to both Bayonne and Biarritz from outside the airport, and they cost 1 or 2EUR ($1.40-2.80) depending on how long you want the ticket to last (1 hour or 24 hours). You can also book private airport transfers with Skyscanner, which is typically more convenient if you are travelling in a group as you can take a shuttle transfer door-to-door.
· Passengers will find taxis just outside the airport, and a trip to Biarritz can fall between 10 and 20EUR ($14-28), and to Bayonne 15-30EUR ($21-42).
