Melbourne’s Avalon Airport (AVV) is solely a domestic facility, and often welcomes in cheap flights to this city. This is a fairly small airport, but there are more amenities here than you’d expect, with two cafes, free WiFi, workbenches, USB and charging points, a Kids Zone, a Games Room, public telephones, a newsagency, and an ATM.

There are coaches that can take you to Geelong or Melbourne, as well as taxis that serve the airport. If you are going to Geelong, the fare is around $40-50, but if you make the journey to Melbourne expect the fare to come to a steep $120-130.

Jetstar is the primary carrier flying in and out of Avalon Airport.

Australia’s Culture Capital is one of the country’s most delightful cities. With an established hipster scene that has promulgated a host of contemporary fusion restaurants, coffee houses, trendy clubs, and gourmet marketplaces. You can roam the central part of the city to access most of the museums and galleries, and take in the Victorian architecture of the city, or spend your time on the glamorous St. Kildan coast, made up of entertainment venues and golden beaches.

Things to do in Melbourne

If you want to take advantage of the cultural attractions this city has built its reputation on, then you should find your way to the Southbank and Arts Centre, where you can book a concert in Hamer Hall to see the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, or see a play or concert at one of the many theatres and venues in this part of town.

There are also wonderful museums and galleries here, such as the excellent National Gallery of Victoria, one of the best in the country, with international and national works displayed. The highlight here though is the Australian art collection, that spotlights Aboriginal art. For more history on the country’s indigenous peoples, and a few family friendly exhibitions, add the Melbourne Museum to your itinerary. Or book a cruise down the Yarra River, which is an excellent way to see this city.

Don’t forget to stroll through Fitzroy Gardens, where you will find Captain Cook’s Cottage, brought from Yorkshire and rebuilt right in the centre of Melbourne. Then make sure you spend a day in Melbourne’s St. Kilda neighbourhood. Known for its dreamy beaches, its trendy cafes, and hipster shopping, and a place where you can easily while away the hours.

Best time to visit Melbourne

·         Melbourne experiences more of the traditional ‘seasons’. Winters can sink to as low as 7°C, even during the day, and the spring season can take some time to get going. However, the summers in this city are dry and warm, hovering between 15 and 26°C, and the best time to visit this great town.
