Why visit French Polynesia?

The islands of French Polynesia are frequently cited as the most beautiful place on earth, and that descriptor could not be more apt. Picture lush, forested peaks rising up from water so blue it rivals the sky, with a border of soft white sand, and lagoons hiding a rainbow-coloured underwater landscape, and you have the measure of these spectacular islands. There are few places in the world that can make you forget your troubles, but the isles and atolls of French Polynesia is one of them.

Things to do in French Polynesia

Tahiti is the largest island in the archipelago, and the most famous. And you can find many of the most celebrated cultural attractions on this island, such as the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands, where you will see collections of traditional weapons, games, art, and literature. There is the Tomb of the last Tahitian king, Pomare V, who ruled Tahiti before it was officially colonised by France in 1880. There is also a museum to the French Artist Paul Gauguin, who lived in French Polynesia for two years in the late 19^th century.

For the jaw-dropping natural attractions, there are plenty of islands to choose from. There is the island of Moorea, whose skyline you can see clearly from Tahiti, including the emerald Mount Rotui, which you can hike. There is the famous Bora Bora, which is surrounded by a lagoon that makes this island of the most coveted places in the world to swim and snorkel. There is Huahine, which is less touristy, and boasts almost empty beaches, with that legendary soft-white sand and turquoise waters.

Whichever island you choose, you can be assured of friendly hospitality, lush vegetation to hike within, and stretches of sand that look so perfect they could be on a travel poster.

Best time to visit French Polynesia

·         The islands of French Polynesia do not tend to fluctuate much in temperature, so you need to aim your visit for the driest time of year. This is during May to October, when you can expect the days to fall between 21 and 29°C.

·         For small islands like Bora Bora, usually the shoulder seasons are a little better as prices can get a little out of control during the peak season, November in particular is the best time, when you can still count on mostly dry weather.

·         December through to March is hot and wet, and can be subject to pesky mosquitoes, so if you do brave this season, bring some repellent and a waterproof. However, it’s not all doom and gloom, the rains tend to be short and sharp, leaving you with an empty beach and the sunshine.

Flights to French Polynesia

·         The Fa’a’a International Airport (PPT), also known as the Papeete Airport, is the only international airport for the islands of French Polynesia, and is located on the main island of Tahiti. If you are planning to travel to other islands in the archipelago, you will find most of the domestic routes leave from here too.

·         Because there are no direct flights to Tahiti, and you will have to fly through Auckland (AKL), which does run frequent flights out to this island. Usually Sydney (SYD) is the most convenient departure point in Australia for this route.

·         You will most likely fly to French Polynesia with Air New Zealand, Qantas, Air Tahiti Nui, Hawaiian Airlines, Air France, Aircalin, American Airlines, Delta, and LATAM

·         Usually you do not need a visa to French Polynesia if you are an Australian citizen, but it’s important to check the latest information before you depart to avoid any problems upon entry.
