Roskilde is about 40 km west of Copenhagen and the International Airport on the island of Zealand in Denmark. It is near the Roskilde Fjord, and has ancient roots going back to the Viking days. One of its main attractions is the Viking Ship Museum, ships that were sunk in the Fjord for defensive purposes and excavated in the 1960's to create the historical museum. You can ride on the Fjords on more modern ships to get a sense of the ancient days of Vikings. Perhaps more famous than the quaint town of 50,000 and it's Viking and later Roman Catholic roots is the Roskilde Festival. Started in 1971 and held in June, it has become one of the largest rock festivals in Europe, gathering over 100,000 people and some of the biggest names in music, from Canned Heat and Bob Marley, to The Cure and Bruce Springsteen. In 2000, there was the Roskilde Tragedy, where 9 people were crushed to death when Pearl Jam was performing at this festival, leading to crowd control changes at all festivals in Europe. Roskilde also has a famous brick cathedral that was the center of the Catholic faith in Denmark some centuries ago, and a major University located there.

The ancient capital city of Denmark is a very nice city, looking a the fiord bebeath. We spent there only an afternoon, just the time to visit the Cathedral, that is quite famous, and the Museum of Viking boats.
