Republic of Tajikistan, or Tajikistan, is a mountainous landlocked sovereign country that can be found within Central Asia. The smallest country in Central Asia in terms of area, Tajikistan is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. Tajikistan is characterised by the mountains of the Pamir range that cover over 90 percent of the country. Its capital and largest city is Dushanbe.

Visit the Dushanbe Zoo or the Dushanbe Zoological Park, and experience Tajikistan’s fauna first hand. Founded in the 1960s, the zoo can be found within the centre of the city on the Luchob river bank, and is home to an estimate of 600 animals. Among the animals that can be found within the zoo include lions, a jaguar, snow leopard, brown and black bears, Bactrian camel, donkey, and wolf, to name a few.

How to get around within Tajikistan

Moving around Tajikistan can be done via its many minivans or shared taxis, or via train, motorcycle and car. There is a scheduled minivan service that goes between major Tajikistan cities; the minivans charge per passenger and not by vehicle, with some SUVs available for hire, and leaves from Khujand’s large minibus terminal that can be found just outside the city proper. When travelling by train, the Train 368 heads out towards Dushanbe from Khujand every Fridays and Sundays, travelling from around 4:38 p.m. to 10:36 p.m. the day after. Going by car or motorcycle is possible via the Pamir highway. It is used on the Mongol Rally southern route, with numerous trips that go to and from Bishkek or Osh, within the country of Kyrgyzstan. There are SUVs and motorcycles available for rent within Kyrgyzstan that takes travellers on the Pamir Highway.

The airport serves with an asphalt-concrete surfaced runway that spans around 3,100 metres or 10,200 feet in length. Tajikistan has 26 airports, with 18 of them paved.
