Why visit Pisa?

It is easy to dismiss Pisa as a one-stop-shop for a photo opportunity with its iconic Leaning Tower, but Pisa has much more to recommend it than that. Set in Italy’s Tuscany region, it has all the characteristic trademarks of that beautiful province. You’ll find a gorgeous Duomo in the centre of town, terracotta tiles, little trattorias, cobbled streets, and an ambling river bisecting this pretty city.

Things to do in Pisa

Of course, you must visit the city’s most famous attraction, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which seems to defy logic as it lists to one side. Grounds were broken on this tower in the 1100s, and has been standing ever since. You can climb the almost 300 steps to the top and admire the city view.

Then, right next to the tower is the extraordinary Cathedral of Santa Maria, a stunning basilica built in the Romanesque style, with a beautifully preserved mosaic within the church’s apse. There is also the lovely Baptistery, where Galileo is said to have been baptized. There is an adjoining museum holds many treasure from the church, from caskets, jewellery, and sculptures.

For a wider understanding of this charming city, and its artistic heritage, visit the National Museum, which houses some magnificent paintings, especially from the 12th and 13th centuries. Or take in the charm and bustle of Pisa by strolling down the main drag, Walking Street, populated by souvenir shops, and street performers.

Lastly, do not forget to amble along the Arno River, which runs through the glorious city of Florence as well. This is a lovely aspect of the city, with palazzos and plazas branching off the banks.
